The Singapore Chamber Music Festival (SCMF) 2026 presents two engaging public workshops as part of its Academy Series, offering audiences and young musicians the chance to learn from distinguished chamber artists and professors from Singapore, Japan, and the United States.

Both workshops are free with registration, with free seating, and open to all who are interested in chamber music.

Festival Workshop I

Playing with Expectations
with Yang Shuxiang and Abigail Sin

Thu, 26 Mar 2026
YST Seminar Room 8
7:30pm - 9:00pm

How do performers shape the way audiences experience music? In this interactive workshop, violinist Yang Shuxiang, Artistic Director of SCMF and an acclaimed chamber musician and educator, joins pianist Abigail Sin, one of Singapore’s leading pianists and pedagogues, to explore how musicians play with listeners’ expectations through interpretation, phrasing, and ensemble collaboration.

Through demonstrations and discussion, the artists will reveal how subtle interpretive decisions—from timing and articulation to ensemble balance—can create tension, surprise, and narrative in chamber music performance.

Highlights include:

  • Live demonstrations of interpretive choices in chamber repertoire

  • Insights into ensemble listening and musical dialogue

  • How phrasing and timing shape a musical narrative

Festival Workshop II

Say It Without Words
with Sandy Yamamoto and Jonathan Ong

Mon, 30 Mar 2026
SNYO Studios
5:30pm - 6:45pm

Music has the unique ability to communicate emotion and meaning beyond language. In this workshop, violinist Sandy Yamamoto, an internationally acclaimed performer and professor and a founding member of the renowned Miró Quartet, joins Jonathan Ong, the first violinist and founder of the renowned Verona Quartet, to explore how chamber musicians convey character, emotion, and storytelling without words.

Through musical excerpts and discussion, the artists will demonstrate how tone colour, articulation, and ensemble interaction allow chamber music to speak directly to audiences.

Highlights include:

  • Demonstrations of musical storytelling in chamber music

  • Exploration of tone colour and expressive nuance

  • Insights into on-stage communication within small chamber ensembles

Part of the SCMF Chamber Music Academy Series, these workshops complement the festival’s concerts with educational programmes including coaching sessions and a public showcase concert. They offer a rare opportunity to experience the artistic insights of leading chamber musicians up close.
